Hounds busily sniff the damp ground, their noses millimetres from the dewy grass.

The scene of a mid-winter hunt on a Taranaki farm today hardly resembles that of the earliest hunts 100 years ago.

Gustavus Sole and son Percy were among the first to hunt for the elusive hare. It is thought they set out on foot with a pair of beagles in 1905.
