Summary


PATRIOTISM is a quirky issue. Once called on, it can move individuals to greatness and lift entire nations to achievements far beyond normal expectation. For a variety of complex reasons New Zealand appears blessed with more than the normal quota of this valuable motivator.

Perhaps it is the comparative isolation in a distant corner of the wide Pacific, or its small size, or the briefness of its colonial history, but its residents tend to take far greater pride in the achievements and successes of their fellows than many other nations. There is also a generosity of spirit that seeks to share this, and its many other blessings, with the rest of the world.
