A NEW poll on what Australians think about New Zealand offers the tourist market here what must be one of its most tempting opportunities ever. It shows that outside Australia and, despite being a bitter sporting rival and the butt of many transtasman jokes, New Zealand is the country Australians would most like to call home.

Twenty one percent of the 500 Australians surveyed said given the opportunity they would join their New Zealand mates, 13% chose Canada, 12% Britain and only 6% elected to live in the US. Bruce Hawker, managing Director of Hawker Britton UMR Research, which conducted the poll, says despite the jokes about New Zealand, Australians have a genuine affection for their Tasman neighbours.
