A Growing Problem with Region's Coastal Tree Line

ALL over New Zealand trees are dying, victims of an increasing Kiwi pre-occupation with protecting views and keeping gardens tidy and free from shade. This fraught process has neighbours fighting with neighbours and even a few normally law-abiding citizens behaving like criminals, sneaking round in the dead of night poisoning or ring barking the worst of the scenery-blockers.

The problem exists from Auckland's multi-million-dollar exclusive suburbs to New Plymouth's popular, but windswept, foreshore. Latest to join the fray in Taranaki are the owners of the Waterfront Hotel, who are now seeing the early impact on their view by extensive planting beside the foreshore walkway. They claim young trees are already obliterating their view of the sea and the situation will only get worse as the trees mature. Their objection is one echoed by many who have spent a lot of money building or buying property overlooking the Tasman.
