Diana Enters the Realm of the Super-Conspiracy

Summary

THE INTERNET is a wonderful place to find a conspiracy theory. Every bizarre notion imaginable is out there, being exchanged and embellished by people with conditions ranging from a hearty sense of humour to profoundly worrying cases of paranoia. Most are butterfly brief, butting up against common sense and staleness, and eventually shrinking back to the troubled heads of their inventors. A few, however, develop sufficient critical mass to take on lives of their own.

Elvis lives -- he's been spotted all over the world so it must be true. The Moon landings were faked, staged in Hollywood-style studios -- and thousands of space agency employees over a couple of decades have been sworn to silence. Right. And JFK, of course. The multiple gunmen working for the Mafia, the Communists, the American military machine, you name it. The more such elite conspiracies are denied, the more they become entrenched: well, they would say that, and why would they spend so much time denying the rumours if they were not frantic to keep the truth covered up? (Possibly because so many conspiracists devote their lives to asking wildly contorted questions that are more impossible to answer with every passing decade. The scene becomes self-fuelling.)
