Asian Hedge Funds Continue Backslide in July

HONG KONG (HedgeWorld.com) - Japanese long/short equity fund performance remains dismal, dragging down the performance of pan- Asian hedge fund indexes. According to the Bank of Bermuda AsiaHedge index, Asian hedge funds in their composite lost 0.59% last month, but the index is still up 2.88% for the year. The index excluding Japanese funds was down only 0.41%, but including Japan the composite posts a negative 1.17% return for July.

Abn Adds Traiana Automation Service to Fx Prime Brokerage

SAN MATEO, Calif. (HedgeWorld.com) - ABN AMRO signed on as a user of Traiana Inc.'s trading relationship management service for its foreign exchange prime brokerage operation. The trading relationship management service will help Amsterdam, Netherlands-based ABN AMRO automate its FX prime brokerage client- servicing capabilities, according to a statement from Traiana. AUCKLAND climbers Steven and Melanie Parker must be getting pretty good at building snow caves in foul mountain weather. The couple were rescued off Mt Taranaki last month after their attempt to climb the mountain was thwarted when weather closed in. They spent half the night sheltering from the wind behind a snow wall.

Cost-Saving Cannabis Proves Anything But

A KAPONGA man who grew cannabis to save money paid a costly visit to the Hawera District Court on Tuesday. Jayde Cezanne Searancke (26) admitted growing 16 cannabis plants under lights, as well as possession of cannabis, cannabis seeds, spotting knives and pipes. He also admitted having a utensil for smoking methamphetamine.

Heritage Trail for Waitara

PEOPLE will soon be able to plot Waitara's history on a heritage trail. Sixteen signs interpreting historical events in Waitara are planned for sites throughout the town.

THE Opunake Events Centre will receive no more finance from the South Taranaki District Council (STDC) until an independent audit is done on the project. The Events Centre Trust has asked for a top-up from the council to complete the $2 million sports facility.

Youth Jailed for `Stupid' Crimes On Mobility Scooter

A 17-YEAR-OLD stole a mobility scooter drove it along the coastal walkway and later crashed it, the New Plymouth District Court heard yesterday. Nathan William Newport, of New Plymouth, admitted to three burglaries. The unemployed teenager and an associate broke into a New Plymouth home on July 6 and took $9000 worth of property.
